SETTING GOALS. No matter what it is or how it is perceived by different people, its definition does not change.

Let’s talk about realistically setting your goals and how to achieve them. Because let’s be honest here, what’s the use of setting goals if you have little to no plans of achieving them?

DECIDE WHAT YOU REALLY WANT TO ACHIEVE

First, you need to establish the REASON behind the goal you’re trying to achieve. Not just any reason but a passionate one, that is. This is arguably the most important part. Ask yourself: “Why do I want to [insert goal here]?” Have a reason of why you are doing it and what you will do after you meet that goal.

HAVE SHORT-TERM GOALS CONNECTED TO YOUR LONG TERM GOAL

Divide your end-term goal to small strategic baby goals all connected to eventually reaching your end goal. If you think your goal will probably take 5 years to achieve, make yearly and quarterly goals all designed to compliment your end goal. It’s more realistic and makes the load a lot lighter.

MAKE A STRATEGIC PLAN

A goal without a concrete plan in attaining it is just the same as daydreaming or wishful thinking. Like any good Lifehacker, there should be a blueprint in your mind. If you can that mental blueprint into black and white then that would even be better. It’s your guide, your map.

S.M.A.R.T. stands for the following:

  • Specific – Ask yourself what exactly it is that you want to accomplish.
  • Measurable – It means breaking your goal down into measurable elements
  • Achievable/Attainable – Say you aspire to go to the moon, however, you do not have the right resources to achieve this goal. Or you aspire to become a basketball player but you’re actually better at something else? Nothing is impossible but you need to be realistic with your goals and you’ll achieve them.
  • Relevant – Your goals need to align with the vision you have of the life you want to live.
  • Time – Set a specific target date.

Realistic goals are made to be realized. When you have reached your goal, do not forget to celebrate and thank everyone who helped you achieve your goal, physically, mentally and emotionally.
