Working overseas has been the aspiration of many Filipinos. In fact, just for the year 2018, there are about 2.339 million Filipinos working abroad. Source
Oftentimes, those they left behind in their country think that the moment their loved one or a family member leaves to work overseas, a secured and good life awaits them. In some cases, yes, but there are those who aren’t that fortunate.
Here are some things they don’t tell you:
THEY MAKE UNBELIEVABLE SACRIFICES TO BUY ALL THE GIFTS YOU ASK FOR
They scrimp on everything in order to save and send bigger money and gifts to their families back home. Some even live on canned goods, bread and coffee, or whatever food item is on sale.
THEY AVOID REVEALING THEIR REAL CONDITION OVERSEAS
Most OFWs do this so their loved ones won’t worry about them. They always paint a happy picture to their families even if deep inside they are already suffering – work discrimination, unfair wages,or even sickness.
THEY WORK SO HARD TO FORGET THE LONELINESS
Work is their only solitude, and it makes them forget they are homesick and longing for the company of their family.

They see our photos taken at tourists sites and think our daily life is like that- all fun and trips. What they don’t realize is we work 24/7 and a day off is rarely taken. – Lou, Qatar
